2016-17 CTSI Young Investigator Training Awards

The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (ICTSI) recently announced its 2016-17 Young Investigator Training Award recipients.  ICTSI was able to fund 10 Young Investigator Awards (4 renewals and 6 new awards) this period.  The awards, funded by ICTSI (partially funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Clinical and Translational Sciences

Award, Neuroscience Strategic Research Initiative, the IU Department of Medicine and institutional support) are focused on improving young scientists at the participating universities. 

 

The 2016 NEW Young Investigator awardees are:

 

  • Takashi Hato, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Nephrology, Indiana University School of Medicine, is examining ways to treat sepsis-induced acute kidney injury in hospitalized patients.



  • Kyle Minor, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Indiana University, Purdue University School of Science, is studying the use of wearable technologies as novel therapeutic tools for serious mentor illness.


  • Marguerite O’Haire, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Comparative Pathobiology, Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, is analyzing the therapeutic efficacy of service dogs for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.


  • Jenifer Prosperi, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Indiana University School of Medicine (South Bend), is examining pathways to circumvent breast cancer chemoresistance.


  • Andrea Shin, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Indiana University School of Medicine, is studying the effects of bile, fatty acids, and intestinal microbiota in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.


  • Tuan Tran, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Indiana University School of Medicine, applies systems biology approaches to define immunity to Plasmodium falciparum and elucidate the complex host responses during the course of malaria infections.

 

The 2016 Young Investigator RENEWAL awardees are:

 

  • Jill Fodstad, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, IU School of Medicine, is developing a parent–training program to decrease early self-injury in infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities.



  • Craig Lammert, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, IU School of Medicine, Digestive and Liver Diseases, is studying autoimmune liver diseases and contributing exposures.


  • Troy Markel, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery, IU School of Medicine, is studying the effects of human bone marrow as an alternate therapy for intestinal ischemia.


  • Tamika Zapolski, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Indiana University, Purdue University, is planning to modify and pilot test a behavior therapy intervention to reduce risk-taking behaviors in adolescents.
