The Role of Inflammation and Immune Responses in Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disease

Location: 216 DeBartolo Hall

Malú Gámez Tansey, Ph.D., Professor of Physiology, Emory University

Tansey researches the role and regulation of inflammation and immune system responses in brain health and disease. She will discuss the molecular mechanisms that are involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease. Though researchers know inflammation plays a role in development of these diseases, they seek to better understand the specific inflammatory pathways involved in order to develop novel therapeutics. Learn about research into how tumor necrosis factor (TNF) could play a role in development of these age-related neurodegenerative diseases, as well as how gastrointestinal inflammation, gut microbiome changes, and lifestyle and environmental factors either protect or predispose people from developing them.
